I know I have been totally MIA lately. Things have been stressful and hectic in the work and family realms these past couple of weeks. There were hospitals involved and crazy, ridiculous deadlines on top of that at work. But don't worry, everyone is okay now, no more hospitals, and life has started to go back to normal.
I haven't achieved much in the way of sewing lately, unsurprisingly. I have finally started working on my mini quilt for the Schnitzel and Boo Mini Quilt Swap (IG: #schnitzelandboominiquiltswap), though! Originally I thought I would do a paper pieced star sampler... But then I made one star using the Atomic Star pattern by Wombat Quilts and loved it so much, I didn't want to make any more. So instead, this will be the focal point:
And it will be surrounded by a couple of borders. Including one that is made up of tiny flying geese! Most of the geese will use prints from Tula Pink's Acacia and some solids :D I'm really excited to see it all come together and REALLY hoping I have enough gray fabric. Eee! I might be cutting it a little close! We'll see how it goes.
I'm really looking forward to being back around more often, reading blogs, writing blog posts, and keeping up with the world! At one point I had over 250 unread blog posts in my feed. I picked through and read one here and there, but mostly I just let them go. Better to start fresh, don't you think?
What have you been working on these past couple of weeks?

Bee Blocks and Big Quilts
Happy Wednesday!
I don't know why happy, exactly. Except maybe that it's halfway through the week. Which is actually true for me this week! Usually I work Tuesday-Saturday, so my "hump day" is Thursday. But this weekend I get Saturday off! YAY!
Anyway. On to the fabric-y stuff.
I have my bee block for this month prepared for sewing together.
This is actually the only space on my cutting table right now. I think I need to do some cleaning over this long weekend...
As you can see, it's quite a mess! And I need to get cutting for a wedding quilt, so all this has to go.
Also! Exciting news! I finished quilting the Scrappy Chevrons quilt!
It hasn't been trimmed or bound yet. But the binding is almost finished (I'm going scrappy with that, too!) so I should be able to make quick work of it. Full reveal pictures when it's finally finished!

Progress!
I did it! I finished ripping out my sad, wonky FMQ on the scrappy chevrons quilt. I am now a quarter of the way through some nice straight lines...
It's still a bit unruly, but manageable! When it's done it will be a lovely cross-hatch. And I am no longer angry at it. So that's good ;)
I've also been putting my scraps to work this week making some mother's day gifts.
It has been a lot of fun playing with all these little squares! I'll show you more on Friday.

A New WiP
Yes, I have started a new quilt. It's been a while, huh?? I have been a little more focused on small projects lately it seems.
This one is for Mario, my wonderful boyfriend who has waited ever so patiently for me to finally make him a quilt. It has taken me this long to get around to it because I just couldn't decide on a pattern! I wanted to do something amazing and complicated and time consuming. Because you know, Mario is special. But I finally decided I should just bring him in on the decision.
And as it turns out, Mario loves churn dashes! Who knew, right? He especially loves them when they're huge. So that's what I'm doing. Enormous 24" blocks! They're marvelously fast.
Sorry for the dark crappy pictures! I have not been doing well with remembering to take pictures before work in the morning... The red is really much better than that! It's Kona Poppy. And the background is Kona Meringue, just in case you were wondering ;)
This can was the color inspiration. We ordered this beer at a local pizza place and Mario thought it looked awesome. So naturally I said we could turn it into a quilt! So we found some at Total Wine to help with the fabric choosing. Yes, it is empty now. I wanted to get a picture before we actually drank the beer, but there was Top Gear to watch and it really couldn't wait. You understand, right?
I currently have 7 of 12 blocks. There is every possibility that this will be done before his birthday in late May! EXCITEMENT.

I'm Still Making Stuff!
Slowly. Very slowly.
You see, I thought I was going to have amazing amounts of time to sew when I found out in December that the boyfriend was being moved to 2nd shift (supposedly temporarily, but I'm not holding my breath!). Trying to put a happy spin on what is really a sad thing.
But what has really happened the past couple of months is a whole lot of moping and a whole lot of TV watching because the house is just too quiet at night. Pathetic, I know. But we seriously haven't spent more than a day apart in probably 4 years? I'm really used to seeing him every day... and during the week I see him for maybe a few minutes in the morning before I leave for work and that's it. UGH. I know. Excuses, right?
Anyway, in spite of my mopeyness, I have been able to get a few things accomplished. Like sewing my Catvent quilt top together:
Isn't it pretty?? I just love how it turned out!
I just need to decide on a backing and get it quilted now. Eee! Can't wait! I have been working on a few more things, too. But you're going to have to wait just a little while to see those ;)

WiP for the Holiday
Heeeeey there. Long time no see, huh? Yeah. School and house hunting have been totally wiping me out. I've been lucky to feel like I have enough energy at the end of the day to get some sewing in. But the end is in sight! Just one more paper, 2 tests, and a group presentation and I will be back to the blissful homework-free lifestyle. At least until next semester when I plan on taking another Spanish class :)
But things have been happening...
For example, I decided what to do with my Scrumptious layer cake :D I'm really excited about this one. I definitely need more white before I can finish, but totally have it all planned out!
I even started a few blocks (these were for testing purposes but will definitely be included in the top!). Picture is pretty dark, sorry! There is no light at all here until after I go to work :/ And the sun is gone when I get back. Lame.
I've still got these waiting to be turned into blocks, too.
I haven't made much progress on the scrappy chevrons, but I'm having an Alternative Black Friday Craft Day (yes, it needed caps!) this Friday so I plan to work on that while sipping wine and giggling with my friends. It will be a good day. I also have all the bits for 2 more swoon blocks cut and ready to go on my sewing table... To be honest, my sewing table is quite a mess right now. But I don't want to clear it off because I'm still working on all the stuff on it! So here it is in all its messy glory. Because I'm nice and want to make you feel better about your sewing space ;)
See? What a mess! Oh well. Creativity isn't tidy, is it?
One last thing! This weekend I'm going to be making some 15" Churn Dash blocks for the lovely Audrey of Hot Pink Quilts, who is making a quilt for the people in Washington, IL who were affected by the tornadoes. She lives in that area but was very fortunate not to have any serious damage to her home or her family. But so many others weren't so lucky! Do you have time to make a quick block to send off to her? If so, you can find the details here. And the original post is here. Thanks for considering it!

So Many Colors!
Progress is happening. It is. I am finally ironing the 500+ little blocks that will eventually become a big scrappy chevron quilt. I am turning the orderly little piles on the left into the chaos on the right:
It took me 2 recorded lectures (both over an hour) to get this many ironed. I think one more and I'll be done... I really hope. I hate ironing! Although I do like it more when I'm actually watching something fun.
Here's another shot of all that color:
I think this quilt is going to be SUPER AWESOME. when it's finished. It better be after all this work!
I also may have had a little shopping accident...
Yes. That is a layer cake of both Scrumptious and Salt Water. And two mini charm packs of In From the Cold and Simply Style... The Simply style is for my granny blocks. The In From the Cold is because I think (probably mistakenly) that this may finally be the year I make stockings. Maybe. Scrumptious is already being turned into a Christmas gift (pictures to come!) and the Salt Water... is because it's pretty. So, whatever. 75% have actual plans attached. That's not bad!
I know I have been an infrequent visitor to my own blog lately and that's because there is SO MUCH else going on in my life. I went to my first conference last week (which means I'm officially an adult) AND. I'm house shopping! AHH! Add the two classes I'm taking to that and it pretty much means I barely have time to think, let alone blog. But once or twice a week is just fine for my brain right now. Hopefully once things settle down in other areas I'll have more time to focus on my far more glamorous internet life. Because let's face it, quilt/craft blogging is MUCH more glamorous than dealing with the day to day problems of a budget-strapped academic research library. RIGHT?
Oh man, I am tired. Have a lovely evening. And wish me luck on my test tomorrow! ;)

WiP Wednesday!
It's that time again! So! What do I have in progress?
Well, there is my scrappy chevron quilt. I spent a lot of time cutting out little 4.5" x 2.5" rectangles and sorting them by color. I can't tell you how happy I was to finish that part!
This also yielded a HUGE stack of 2.5" squares, which will be fun to play with at some point. My smaller dog needs a new, smaller dog bed. I might just make a simple patchwork bed for her with my leftovers ;)
And now I am in the process of sewing them into pairs... and then I will sew them into rows!
Here is a nice, dark shot of my super scientific method for keeping track of all this chaos! It took quite a lot of time to color it all in. I'm crossing off sets of colors as I go. This could take a while! And yes, that is owl fabric you see behind my notebook. The pajamas are also in progress! I also kind of want to take a stab at this boat neck pattern from Melly Sews. The pattern is free for a limited time but only in size small. But if you're not a small maybe if you know how to scale patterns you could still use it? I don't know. Small will probably fit me. I might need minor adjustments, but I love boat neck shirts so I'm going to give it a shot! If nothing else, I know of at least one friend who would fit a size small for sure :)
I have also been working on socks! Look at the socks!
I tried toe up socks this time. I don't know how I felt about the short row toe. I don't like the lumpiness it leaves on the edges... but maybe that's actually a result of my inexpert knitting? We shall see.
But aren't they pretty? I'm using some Serenity sock yarn I picked out of the clearance bin at Joann. Still not confident enough to use my expensive yarn for socks. Maybe next time!

First Ever Giveaway!!
Hey guys!
Last you heard of me I was fighting with my machine, which was making unhappy noises and munching on fabric... Well, we established a truce. I cleaned her out again, spending lots of time getting into all the little nooks and crannies with my tiny brush. Then I switch out the needle and rethreaded her once again and even switched bobbins (hey, you never know!). Now it seems we are back on track. And to celebrate, I got SO MUCH DONE this weekend.
A couple of things I can't show you. I want them to be a surprise for the recipients!
But I did replace the fabric that wasn't big enough for my Swoon. I think I like these even better:
I had planned on using a very pale blue and a darker purple- the same one from my Hounds tooth quilt, in fact. But my elephants are so happy and bright, I decided I needed something better! I'd tell you the names of the colors if I could remember. How have I forgotten already? Oops...
Then I cut some little elephants... haven't started the blocks yet, but they're so cute!
I really can't wait to get back to my Swoon. I finished all my major commitments except the wedding quilt, but that's all basted and ready for quilting so I am feeling pretty good about it. I think I can allow myself so Swoon time :)
And finally, I learned to make little fabric baskets!!
Aren't they awesome??
The bigger one has a 4" base with 2.5" sides. The smaller one is the same height, but with a 3" base. I love them! I want to make about 50 more...
I used some scraps of chevron fabric I had hiding in my stash... I cleaned and organized my sewing room yesterday and was amazed by all the treasures I found! Definitely need to pay more attention to the things I already have.
So how would you like to win these cute little nesting baskets + some scraps of cute animal themed fabric? I am now up to 46 followers on Bloglovin' and I want to say thank you guys fr being so awesome!! :)
I might add a couple more cute animals to this pile. Maybe even a scrap of my precious elephants! ;)
All you have to do to enter is leave one comment on this post. I'll choose a winner this Sunday, August 11th. I'd be happy to ship internationally, too!

WiP Wednesday: Trying not to Procrastinate!
I have some deadlines approaching. A couple of blocks for something secret, two swap items, and a wedding quilt (no, I still haven't basted it!). So what have I been working on?
An improv-pieced panel that will become my new grocery bag dispenser! It is high time I put some cuteness in my kitchen. I used some precious elephant scraps (don't worry, I still have plenty for the Elephant Swoon!) and other random bits. It was so much fun putting this together! I think there will be more improv piecing in my future.
I also did one productive thing and made this month's bee block:
Little fiddly strips are not my favorite thing, but I think it turned out pretty well. She wanted it completely scrappy. I think I got that covered!
I would also be working on my Swoon... but tragedy struck. The piece of light blue fabric I had earmarked to pair with the rest of my lime green elephants is sadly too small. I guess I need to go shopping because the only other piece I have that might be big enough is brown -.- I don't think brown has a place in this quilt. So that is tabled until I find some motivation to cut the next color of elephants or get some more fabric!
Maybe my grocery bag dispenser being almost finished and my Swoon disaster (I know I'm being dramatic!) will get me to work on the things with deadlines. Here's hoping!

WiP: Paper Piecing!
Remember when I said I was going to be trying paper piecing for the first time? It's been so much fun!
I am making a paper pieced Tardis, which was the first block in the Doctor Who Along over at Trillium designs. Here's what I have done so far:
It's almost starting to look like a Tardis!! :D The instructions say this isn't a beginner block, but I really haven't had much trouble with them. Of course, I haven't started piecing the tiny bits that make up the light on top, so we'll see. I just love it, though! It does create a bit of a mess, though...
But even still, I think paper piecing is going to be a recurring thing for me. I love how precise it is! I would never be able to piece such little pieces otherwise. At least, not so well. It is still a little crooked in places, but it is my first try, so I'm not being too hard on myself :) I am planning on making the finished block into a little wall hanging for a friend's birthday. And then maybe I'll make one for myself, too!
I really want to get this finished tonight! We'll see, though. What are you working on?

WiP Wednesday
First of all...
Instead, I decided to start a new quilt!
It doesn't look like much yet, but these bright squares are going to be paired with my low volume charms to make a whole lot of pinwheels! I might be crazy. That's a lot of HSTs to make. But I think it will look so cool when it's done. So I am forging ahead!
That's all today. Just a quick little update. I should have a cute little finish to share with you Friday, though, so stay tuned!

WiP Wednesday: Scrappy Edition
I have become obsessed. All I have done since my last post is make scrappy trip blocks... Well, and eat, sleep, and spend time with my boyfriend and dogs. And volunteer at the Poetry Center. But all my other time has been spent on this:
This is my scrappy trip quilt at 22 blocks. I am now at 30! I made... 7... of those today. See? I told you I was obsessed! I just need 6 more and I can start putting them together! I really want to try to get those done tomorrow. Then I can spend the weekend putting the top together and cobbling together a backing and then! Next week can be spent quilting! I am SO EXCITED about this quilt. I plan on laying them all out and snapping a couple of photos when I get them all done. I might be lazy and do this with my phone. Follow me on Instagram (@crookedbanana) if you wanna see!
So that's been my week. I haven't really responded to e-mails (sorry!) or spent much time interacting with the outside world at all unless I had a prior commitment. I have a problem. I will rejoin the land of the people shortly, I promise! And hopefully have new projects to show you in the next couple of weeks :)

| Please excuse the huge wire mess... that's what happens when a puppy trips on an errant wire and tangles them ALL up. |

Make a List... Tuesday?
Hello!
It was a quiet weekend on my little blog. I took a little break from sewing after the whirlwind of finishing my sister's quilt. I was a tad obsessed with it and pretty much spent every hour I wasn't working or eating or watching a movie with the boyfriend (I couldn't neglect him completely...) with that quilt. No regrets! It turned out great and my sister loved it :) She just got a new job, too, so I decided I was justified in giving it to her 6 weeks before her birthday.
After that I needed a break. I was also scheduled to work Saturday, so that was part of it. But then that afternoon I got a job offer from the place I REALLY wanted to work, so the rest of the weekend was spent celebrating. And, you know, booking a hotel room in Vegas since I won't be working this weekend anymore. It wasn't a total whim! Some of my old coworkers have been planning a reunion in Vegas and I soooo wanted to go. And I thought I would be able to when I finally got a job except then I got scheduled for Saturdays! But now I've left that position and have another couple of weeks off, so I decided to splurge and just GO. I can't tell you how excited I am! I haven't seen most of these people in almost a year... some much longer than that. We all worked together as undergrads. They were like my family. SO EXCITED. It is going to be legendary.
I also did this while on a break from sewing:
Yeah! Painted lamp shades. I was originally planning to cover them in fabric, but then I saw this idea on Pinterest and decided to go for it. I love how it turned out :) The other one is not quite finished yet. Hopefully I can get to that this week and show you the finished lamps!
But sewing is what you came for, right? Well. Yesterday I did this:
Oh, man. Basting a queen sized quilt was a HUGE job. My fingers still hurt! I had to move most of the furniture out of the living room to do it. But it's done and basted and I've already started the quilting! YAY! The quilting is definitely going to take a while. That quilt it heavy. My shoulders get tired just thinking about it. But it's going to be so worth it when it's done... Just have to keep my mind on how pretty it will look all laid out on my bed!
Quilting this has already taught me one thing.
Variegated thread makes pretty bobbins :)
Before I get back to quilting, though, I need to organize my thoughts. There are so many things I want to do and make! I feel like I need to write it all down so I can get a handle on all my ideas and plan what to do next.
Things I need to do this month:
March Sister's Ten blocks
Quilt February's Skill Builder blocks
March's bee block (a sawtooth star! Yay!)
March Skill builder blocks
Things I want to do not necessarily this month:
Finish quilting Hounds Tooth
Turn my finished Sister's Ten blocks into pillows
Plan a quilt for Mario's birthday
Make a Velocity Girl bag (I already have the supplies!)
Make another dress
Make another skirt
Start my pinwheel quilt
Make myself some pretty potholders
Start a herringbone quilt using my other FQ bundle of Les Amis (I started designing this with the Quilt Design Tool at Thread Bias)
Learn to make blouses and shorts
Turn some silly flannel I bought at Joann into PJ pants
Make a Kindle case
Make a plastic bag dispenser
WOW. Okay, I want to do more things than I thought. And I will probably think of more. But at least I got them out of my head for now. I don't think I will be able to do all of this list in a month! Maybe they should be more long term goals? Ah, well. We'll see how I do. And now, back to sewing!

A New WiP
Yes. I started something new. A quilt for my sister's birthday! It's the Kitchen Window pattern from Elizabeth Hartman's The Practical Guide to Patchwork. I am using Pat Sloniger's Les Amis line in the warm colorway with some coordinating solids for the frame and background. I just love all the little animals! You can see the foxes on top in the photo.
I seem to only take pictures on dreary days. And considering I live in southern AZ, this takes talent. We have a "blizzard warning" in Tucson today! This mostly applies to the mountains, but the novelty of having a blizzard warning in the desert is kind of fun. I wonder if it will snow at all? We'll see!

Hounds Toothing...
I know I have been very terribly quiet. But I have been single mindedly working on my hounds tooth quilt. Well, when I have time to actually sit down and sew. The weekend was busier than I expected and I didn't get nearly as much accomplished as I thought I would. But board games were played and shopping was done and taxes filed, so it was still a successful weekend. It feels so good to have my taxes out of the way! :D And I did them all by myself- no desperate calls to my mother (who works for a company that makes tax preparing software) for explanations of this option and that box. It was a proud moment.
Let me show you my progress...
I don't know how well you can see, but this is the first block I put together... and it was all wrong! Both the purple and light block were cut wrong and I just happened to select those two to use for my first block. UGH. So in one direction they were perfect 11 3/4" and the other they were 11 1/4". BIG difference. It was pretty bad. But, amazingly, there were only maybe 3 other squares cut wrong. Which makes me thing that maybe these were at the end of the strip and weren't meant to be included in the stacks in the first place.. But I found them all and set them aside so no more mistakes would be made.
Once I figured that out and had a sample block that was actually right, I started chain piecing. One light block and one stripey block then one dark block and one stripey block... 2 episodes of Torchwood later and I was done! As you can see, they haven't all been pressed yet. Because I get really sick of it. So I figure I'll go til I run out of rectangle sets and then press some more.
Which brings me to the next problem I had (which I didn't take pictures of..). I had starched all of the stripey blocks because of the bias edges, so thought it might be a good idea to starch the solid half so the whole thing would match in the stiffness department... Well. This was apparently a bad idea because some of my purple squares started SHRINKING. Yeah. It was terrible. And so annoying! Because it was ONLY purple squares, but not ALL of the purple squares. What?? How does that happen? My only guess is that because I didn't buy it all in continuous yardage (I bought a bit of purple when it was on sale because I loved it... then decided it would be great hounds tooth... then decided I wanted it Queen sized. So 3 cuts total) there were differences in the shrinkage? Maybe? I don't know... They only shrunk by about 1/8" but that was enough to throw everything off. I don't really have a solution to this. I stopped starching, but now I'm afraid of what will happen when the top is all sewn together. But I'm pressing on anyway because I MUST.
So now I have a little stack of blocks sewn together.
And I am so proud of how well all my little points are matching up in the center so far :D I am just trying not to worry about it all being ruined by the shrinky problem... I had enough left over purple yardage so that I still have enough squares. So that's good I suppose.
So that's what I've been doing. And that's what I'm going to keep doing so it is all DONE and off of my table. Honestly, I haven't taken a break from it because I'm afraid that if I clear it all away I will lose all motivation and not want to come back to it. And I really, really want this on my bed! So I am soldiering on...
Hopefully the top will be done by the end of the week (and by that I mean SUNDAY) and I can move on to other things and have more exciting pictures to show you. Like this mug.
This is what I drink coffee from every day. Isn't it cute? My sister bought it for me for Christmas because she's awesome and knows me :D The only problem with it is that as I drink, a little bit of coffee collects between the eyes... Maybe not the best design for a mug (I think the handle should have been on the other side... but maybe this is a left hand mug?) but it's so cute, I am letting it slide. Please excuse the mess in the background. My computer desk is usually quite a disaster.
So I will leave you now. I know I still have another award to talk about... but Hounds Tooth is calling my name. I must respond!

WiP Wednesday: In Which Progress is Actually Made
Happy Wednesday!
I have been busy over here in my neck of the desert. My Hounds Tooth quilt is really coming along! Very exciting. I finished sewing strip sets together and now I am cutting out triangles that unfold into beautiful stripey squares! Look!
I also made some progress on a blanket I am crocheting for my sister... pics to come soon!
Now that the monotony of sewing strips together is finished, I am starting to feel excited about this quilt once again. And since the boyfriend is stuck at work late and I already have dinner prepped and ready... I am going to get back to it!
Linking up to WiP Wednesday with Lee at Freshly Pieced! Hope your WiPs are seeing progress, too!

Slow and Steady Wins... Right?
Where did the last week go? I feel like it was just last Wednesday like... yesterday. Time is passing too quickly for my taste.
But I have a little bit to show for all the time passed, at least. I have been making slow but steady progress on my Hounds Tooth quilt. I sewed all the 2.5" strips together! Mostly in one very cold day. There was tea and Doctor Who involved, to be sure. And wrist warmers. And a silly poncho. My hands were still freezing, but it was worth it in the end.
Now I am working on turning all my sewn together strips into pretty, crisply starched and pressed strips. The good news? The steam from the iron helps keep my hands warm. The bad news? It takes forever. I don't have a real ironing board, you see, and I can't fit a whole long strip on my little table. So it takes some shifting. But hey, it's a good excuse to throw on Downton Abbey and spend all morning pressing seams, don't you think? :)
It is so hard to get a good picture of these colors. I promise the purple isn't really that dark! Oh well.
Yesterday was Tuesday, which meant that I joined a couple of my friends for some crafty shenanigans. Another friend hosted this week, which I was grateful for because I really didn't feel like clearing off the dining room table (it was one of those days, okay?). It was such a huge success! She likes to make things out of duct tape and bits of comic books. So she taught us how to make ADORABLE duct tape bows, which I then attached to a cheap dollar store headband.
Isn't it cute?? I opted to just use two kinds of duct tape, but our other friend decoupaged some comic strips to hers before adding the border. I didn't get a picture because I'm dumb, but it turned out really cool, trust me. Here is a cell phone picture of it on my head.

We also made cool pendant things from cut up comics. Mine is this hilarious picture of Sonic making the BEST face. Unfortunately, it takes days for the resin-y stuff we put in the pendant things to dry and harden, so pictures will have to wait til next week. But trust me, it's going to be hilarious. I'm going to give it to the boyfriend to hang in his car because he loves Sonic. I'm also hoping the face Sonic is making will encourage him to slow down... We'll see if that works :P Anyways, it was definitely a good night. After all the crafty goodness I *finally* learned how to play Settlers of Catan! Woo! But now it is back to pressing and starching and pressing and starching.... Weeee!
